The Blue Beetle will return to the DC Universe in James Gunn's upcoming film "Man of Tomorrow," with Xolo Maridueña reprising his role as Jaime Reyes. The news was reported by Variety, confirming Maridueña's involvement in the DC film, which is slated for release on July 9, 2027.

"Man of Tomorrow" is currently in production and directed by James Gunn. Despite the first "Blue Beetle" film's underperformance at the box office, grossing only $130.8 million against a budget of $104 to $125 million, and receiving mixed reviews, the character is being brought back. The initial "Blue Beetle" movie was noted for its unique approach to the superhero genre and Maridueña's performance, though its third act and reliance on genre clichés were cited as hindrances to its overall quality.

In addition to Blue Beetle, Milly Alcock's Supergirl, who is set to star in her own film, has also been confirmed to play a significant part in "Man of Tomorrow." James Gunn, speaking in June 2026, described Alcock's Supergirl as being notably different from her cousin, Superman, which will create dramatic tension within the film.

More details regarding the DC Universe are anticipated to be unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con in 2026.
