Blumhouse and MatPat Team Up for Indie Horror Game Movie Adaptations

Blumhouse Productions has partnered with YouTube personality Matthew 'MatPat' Patrick to develop a slate of films based on popular indie horror games. The first project under this new collaboration will be a movie adaptation of the unsettling puzzle-solving game, Amanda the Adventurer.

This partnership was confirmed by representatives from both Blumhouse and MatPat during a panel at New York Comic Con 2026. MatPat, who hosts several popular educational and gaming-focused YouTube channels, stated that he has "a few projects in the works" with the studio. He expressed his enthusiasm for adapting "all-time favorite indie games and horror channels from the interwebs" for the big screen.

MatPat described the upcoming Amanda the Adventurer film as "horror with heart," highlighting the character's tragic yet horrifying nature and suggesting the movie will explore themes of media trust. He also noted that the project is moving quickly, with writers and directors currently being discussed.

The trend of YouTubers venturing into film adaptations of indie horror games has gained significant momentum. This collaboration follows recent announcements such as Sean 'Jacksepticeye' McLoughlin producing an animated Bloodborne movie and Mark 'Markiplier' Fischbach's self-funded horror film Iron Lung, based on a game of the same name.

The success of recent creepypasta and indie horror adaptations, like Kane Parsons' Backrooms, appears to have drawn major studios' attention to the genre's online appeal. This has led to greenlights for films based on properties such as The Mandela Catalogue and Siren Head, with others like The SCP Foundation also reportedly in development.

While specific details about future projects beyond Amanda the Adventurer were not revealed, speculation suggests MatPat and Blumhouse might look to other popular online horror franchises for inspiration. Titles from creators like Puppet Combo have been mentioned as potential candidates for future adaptations.
