Owners of BMW vehicles are expressing frustration following the appearance of full-screen advertisements for the recently released film, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," directly on their car dashboards. The advertisements, which have been reported across various platforms including the r/BMW subreddit, are tied to a marketing partnership between BMW and the film's distributors. This situation is particularly contentious given a previous statement from BMW Group's Senior Vice President, Stephan Durach, made in late 2023. At the time, Durach stated that BMW would not implement ads in its vehicles, emphasizing that cars are a "private space" and that selling screen time for commercials was not a direction the company intended to take.

The advertisements reportedly manifest in two ways: as a pop-up message stating, "Surprise! Spider-Man just dropped into your BMW!" or as an icon within the dashboard's menu settings. Selecting either option initiates a commercial that occupies the entire dashboard display. One reported commercial features Spider-Man swinging through a city, with a new BMW integrated into the scene. Some viewers have noted peculiar stylistic choices in the advert, such as seemingly nonsensical architecture and a New York skyline that bears only a passing resemblance to the actual city.

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has seen significant box office success, nearing or surpassing the $1 billion mark globally shortly after its release. The integration of movie promotions into vehicle dashboards has ignited a debate about advertising practices within personal spaces, especially in vehicles that represent a considerable financial investment for their owners.

Kotaku reached out to BMW Group for an official comment regarding the scope and implementation of this advertising campaign, but did not receive a response prior to publication.
