Thirteen years after the original film's release, Brad Pitt is officially set to star in a sequel to the 2013 zombie apocalypse hit World War Z. Paramount Pictures announced that Edward Berger, known for directing All Quiet on the Western Front and Conclave, will helm the new project.
Pitt and Berger are reuniting after working together on Pitt's upcoming film, The Riders, which recently completed filming. According to reports, Pitt pitched the idea of a World War Z sequel to Berger during the production of The Riders, leading to Berger's involvement. The studio has since finalized deals with both talents.
Details regarding the plot of the new World War Z movie have not yet been disclosed. The original 2013 film, which grossed over $540 million worldwide, was loosely based on Max Brooks' 2006 novel of the same name. While a sequel was planned and even given a 2017 release date following the first film's box office success, it never entered production and was eventually canceled.
Paramount confirmed in April that a World War Z sequel was in development, identifying it as one of three franchises, alongside Top Gun and Star Trek, that the studio aims to prioritize for big-screen releases. The revival of the franchise comes at a time when horror films have shown strong box office potential, with recent successes like Backrooms and Obsession performing well.
