Despite the completion of a first draft for the screenplay, Sanderson detailed a lengthy production process that pushes a potential release date far into the future.
In an interview with IGN, Sanderson explained that the journey from script to screen involves multiple stages. "I have to finish revisions on it, then will begin the hunt for a director, which is probably the single most important decision that we'll make," he stated. He further elaborated on the post-production timeline, noting that visual effects alone can require up to 18 months for a major film, and that filming itself is likely still several years away. This suggests that even after production wraps, it could take an additional two years for the movie to be ready for release.
Based on Sanderson's projections, the Mistborn movie could potentially be a decade away from its initial announcement, with a release not expected before 2031. While this news may temper the excitement of fans eager to see the Cosmere universe brought to life on the big screen, Sanderson emphasized his current focus on refining the screenplay to its highest possible quality.
On a more immediate note for fans, Sanderson confirmed that his attention is also turning back to the literary side of Mistborn. Following the completion of the movie's first draft, he has resumed work on the first book in the Mistborn Era 3 series, titled Ghostblood. This next installment is slated to be set in the distant future of Scadriel and is anticipated to arrive in December 2028.
