Break The Night, a hack 'n' slash game drawing inspiration from late 2000s aesthetics, combines furries, magical girls, and fluid combat. Despite being in its early stages, the game has shown charm through a recently released demo.
The game's demo was made available as part of this year's SAGExpo, an event originally focused on Sonic the Hedgehog fan games but now featuring a broader range of titles. In Break The Night, players control three roommates who become stranded in 'the Limit,' a dimension between realities, after boarding a mysterious train. Their attempt to escape involves confronting a corrupting entity and discovering magical companions that grant them transformative abilities.
The narrative is still nascent, reflecting the game's early development. The available demo primarily focuses on combat. Players can execute a basic combo with a single button, utilize another to launch enemies into the air or slam them down, and employ a spin attack for area damage. The spin attack is presented as a card, hinting at the roguelike elements where different cards with limited uses could enable varied combos.
While the current combat system may feel somewhat limited in expressiveness, a hallmark of combo-driven action games, the foundational elements are strong. The character designs effectively capture a late 2000s aesthetic, offering a distinct evolution from the more prevalent Y2K style. Movement feels responsive, with a dash ability that, when timed with a jump, allows for rapid traversal, reminiscent of advanced maneuvers in titles like Celeste.
Break The Night is available to wishlist on Steam, and the developers have provided a separate combat demo for those eager to try it out.
