Bruce Campbell has definitively closed the book on his role as Ash Williams, the indelible protagonist of the Evil Dead franchise. In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Campbell confirmed that he has no plans to return to the character, even for voice work in animated projects, signaling that future iterations of Ash will require a soundalike or alternative approach.

This decision may not come as a surprise to long-time fans, as Ash has not been the central focus of recent Evil Dead installments. Campbell explained his reduced involvement in the latest film, Evil Dead Burn, citing his directorial debut with Ernie and Emma as a primary reason. He also indicated a similar level of detachment from the upcoming Evil Dead Wrath, for which he holds an executive producer credit.

Campbell elaborated on his choices, stating, "It really boils down to that: spending time in another country working on somebody else's movie, or spending time in your hometown working on your own movie? It wasn't a hard choice." He further clarified that his involvement in Evil Dead films is optional, and he has chosen to opt out in favor of his own filmmaking endeavors. Campbell mentioned that after a recent tour, he is focusing on his personal film projects.

Campbell's association with the Evil Dead universe dates back to its 1981 origins with The Evil Dead. His enduring collaboration with director Sam Raimi led to his appearances in Raimi's Spider-Man films and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Despite the franchise's evolution to feature other characters and narratives, many fans held out hope for Ash's continued adventures. However, Campbell appears ready to pursue new creative avenues.

Earlier this year, Campbell revealed he was diagnosed with a form of cancer that is treatable but not curable, a factor that may also influence his desire to focus on other aspects of his career and make the most of his time.
