In honor of the late actor Tim Curry, Double Fine Productions is offering its heavy metal action-adventure game Brütal Legend for free. The game is available on the itch.io platform for a period of 666 minutes, a nod to the game's thematic elements. Players can download the game immediately or claim it to add to their library for later.

Tim Curry, who passed away at the age of 80, had a notable career across film, television, and video games. His voice acting work in gaming included roles such as Gabriel Knight, Premier Anatoly Cherdenko in Red Alert 3, and Arl Howe in Dragon Age: Origins. In Brütal Legend, Curry lent his distinctive voice to the villainous Doviculus, Emperor of the Tainted Coil. The character was originally envisioned to be voiced by heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio.

Double Fine founder Tim Schafer recalled Curry's suitability for the role in an interview with USA Today, stating that Curry possessed the perfect voice. Schafer described how Curry reacted enthusiastically to the character's complex nature, noting his fitting response to the description of a villain who might scream in pain or squeal with delight when struck.

This is not the first time Double Fine has made a game available for free. Previously, the studio offered Brütal Legend for a similar 666-minute period to celebrate Ozzy Osbourne, who made a cameo appearance in the game as the Guardian of Metal shopkeeper. At the time of this report, the free offer provides players with just over nine hours to claim the game.
