Hulu's cancellation of its planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot means that the ultimate fate of Buffy and Angel's relationship will remain a mystery. Sarah Michelle Gellar, who was involved in the reboot plans, made the pointed remark during a reunion with Angel actor David Boreanaz at the Emmy Awards.

During their appearance to present an award, Boreanaz remarked, "You know Sarah, I always thought Buffy and Angel would end up together." Gellar responded with a laugh, "Well, I guess we won't find out," a comment that alluded to the cancellation of the new series. The reboot was intended to update the cult classic for a modern audience with a new Slayer at its center, while Gellar was slated to appear in a recurring role. Other original cast members were also expected to make guest appearances.

Reports suggest that the initial pilot script featured only a brief appearance by Gellar, prompting Hulu to request revisions for more screentime for her character. Gellar has previously stated that the reboot's cancellation was due to a single executive who reportedly had no affinity for the original series. While there are indications that Hulu may revisit the idea of a Buffy reboot in the future, Gellar's involvement appears unlikely, leaving the potential resolutions for Buffy and Angel's storyline unexplored.

Before moving on to the award presentation, Gellar and Boreanaz also paid tribute to late cast members Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Nicholas Brendon (Xander), and Michelle Trachtenberg (Dawn), acknowledging the difficult period for the show's cast and crew.
