Bungie is introducing an experimental Player-versus-Environment (PvE) mode to its extraction shooter, Marathon, with the upcoming version 1.1.5 update. The mode, titled Vault Breaker, is set to arrive on July 21 as part of a mid-season update and will offer a roguelite experience within the game's Cryo Archive location.

Players participating in Vault Breaker will encounter progressively challenging vaults across multiple playthroughs. Success in these runs will reward players with Vault Data, which can be used to enhance their Sponsored Kit. Alternatively, this progress can be exchanged for new weapons, items, and other gear at the Vault Breaker Armory, which can then be utilized in other adventures across Tau Ceti. The mode is designed for solo play, duos, or teams of three.

Bungie describes Vault Breaker as a mode where players employ hit-and-run tactics to uncover the secrets of the Cryo Archive, targeting vaults for valuable loot and deeper access. This approach also challenges the United Earth Space Corps' (UESC) control over the Marathon, as players apply constant pressure against Runner incursions during quieter periods when rival crews are focused elsewhere. This strategic positioning allows for more focused maneuvers, free from the chaos of a contested zone.

The Vault Breaker mode will be available for a limited time, running from July 21 through August 4. Bungie has indicated that Marathon's full PvE offering is still in development and is scheduled for release in Season 3.

Marathon is currently available on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. The game's ongoing Season 2, Nightfall, is active now.
