Bungie Admits 'Lost Sight' of Player Desires, Vows to Rebuild Trust

Bungie studio head Poria Torkan has admitted that the developer "lost sight" of what players love about its games in recent years, citing a pattern of broken and shifting promises that eroded community trust. In a recent address, Torkan, alongside Marathon head of product and general manager Josh Dean, acknowledged the studio's struggles and detailed a renewed focus on player engagement.

Torkan stated that Bungie's ambitions had become stalled due to pursuing too many initiatives without adequate focus on player desires. "We lost trust. We lost incredible colleagues. And our ambitions as a studio stalled," Torkan said. "We chased vision without enough focus on what players loved, and that's on us. We own that."

The developer directly addressed player frustration with Destiny 2, particularly concerning the controversial "sunsetting" of content. Torkan expressed understanding of the anger and disappointment, emphasizing that the studio aims to earn back trust rather than simply demand it.

Bungie views Destiny as the studio's foundation and affirmed that it is "absolutely not done with Destiny." The immediate plan involves restoring content previously removed from Destiny 2, such as the Red War campaign, Tangled Shore, and raids like Leviathan and Crown of Sorrow. Bungie described this content as something that "never should have been ripped away to begin with." While a specific timeline for this restoration was not provided, the studio stressed that the process will take time to implement correctly.

In parallel, Bungie is addressing the future of Marathon, where player numbers have declined. The studio intends to evolve the game beyond its current extraction-shooter format into a "deeper survival experience," aiming to preserve existing enjoyable elements while offering players more agency, including both PvE and PvP components.

Internal changes have also been made to foster greater focus within Bungie. "Stability does not mean shrinking our ambition," Torkan noted. "It means focusing on things that you want to see from us and making sure that our vision matches our reality."

Bungie is committed to placing players "above everything else" to mend the relationship with its communities. The studio indicated that it will demonstrate its commitment through its games and player support, rather than relying solely on words. The restoration of long-desired Destiny 2 content represents a significant step, but Bungie faces the challenge of proving its promises through action after years of community feedback.
