Bungie has announced significant changes to the development and delivery of its extraction shooter, Marathon. The studio confirmed that the September seasonal update has been delayed until December, and the game will be moving away from its planned seasonal model altogether.

In a recent blog post, Bungie stated that addressing player feedback necessitated changes to both the game's content and its release structure. The update originally slated for September 22 will now arrive on December 8 as part of the "Symbiosis" update. This delayed content includes a new Runner shell, a permanent PvE experience, a refreshed Perimeter zone, a social space with a firing range, an experimental Team Deathmatch mode, and improvements to new player onboarding.

Prior to the "Symbiosis" update, a smaller, focused update is scheduled for October 6. This will reset player progression and the in-game economy, refresh rewards, and implement general live game improvements. Bungie indicated this would give the team additional time to develop the larger features planned for December and subsequent March updates.

The studio explained that it is moving away from a strict seasonal schedule to provide developers with more flexibility. Instead of adhering to fixed seasonal deadlines, the team will have more time to build, test, and refine features before their release. Bungie acknowledged player feedback since launch, which highlighted a need for more depth, variety, progression, and long-term engagement. The studio stated that it agrees with this assessment and that these upcoming changes are intended to address those concerns.
