Bungie Details Marathon's Evolution with New PvE Mode, Team Deathmatch, and Improved Onboarding

Bungie has revealed an ambitious, multi-year plan to evolve its extraction shooter, Marathon, aiming to expand the game's offerings beyond its current player-vs-player-vs-environment (PvEvP) format. The developer detailed these changes in a blog post, outlining updates through 2027 that include the introduction of a dedicated PvE mode, a team deathmatch mode, and a more welcoming experience for new and returning players.

Evolving Marathon's Core Experience

The overarching goal is to transition Marathon from a solely competitive, high-stakes extraction experience to a more versatile game that caters to a wider range of player preferences. "Marathon needs to support all of them," stated game director Del Chafe III and creative director Julia Nardin in the blog post, acknowledging the diverse desires of the player base.

The first major update, dubbed Symbiosis, is slated for December. This update will introduce Marathon's first permanent PvE mode, providing a space for players to engage with the game's world and challenges without the immediate threat of other Runners. Symbiosis will also feature a competitive Team Deathmatch mode and an expanded version of the beginner-friendly Perimeter map, which will receive a visual overhaul. Additionally, a new playable character, Bishop, described as a fast, melee-focused robot samurai, will be added.

A Broader Vision for 2027 and Beyond

Looking further ahead, a larger evolution of Marathon is planned for March 2027. This significant update aims to create an interconnected system of permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences. It will also feature a completely new onboarding experience, a refactored Cradle area, deeper shell progression, more focused narrative questlines, new alien combatants, and an entirely new zone to explore.

Bungie acknowledged that Marathon, which launched in March, has been challenging and may have limited its appeal to a broader audience. The developer is committed to iterating on the game throughout and beyond 2027, aiming to offer more than just a polished extraction shooter and inviting more players to experience Marathon's lore and gameplay.
