Bungie has provided Destiny 2 players with a final surprise gift: a redeemable emblem featuring the game's logo. The code can be used on Bungie's website to unlock the emblem for in-game use.
Beyond this parting gesture, Bungie communications manager Dylan Gafner confirmed that the studio will continue to offer limited support for Destiny 2. This support will include periodic server maintenance and intervention for critical issues, such as game crashes. Bungie intends to release fixes for major problems if opportunities arise, but significant new content updates are not expected.
The developer officially released the last update for Destiny 2 last month. This move follows a period where the game struggled to maintain player engagement, prompting Bungie to reallocate resources and focus on its new title, Marathon. This shift resulted in layoffs for employees whose roles were tied to Destiny 2.
Despite some player hopes for a continued Destiny universe presence, reports suggest that Destiny 3 is not currently in development due to the substantial investment required. The studio's primary focus is now on Marathon, an extraction shooter that launched in early March with a reported budget exceeding $250 million.
Bungie has faced financial challenges in recent years. Following its acquisition by Sony for $3.6 billion in 2022, the studio recently reported a $765 million impairment loss attributed to Bungie's underperformance. The struggles reportedly intensified around the launch of the "Edge of Fate" expansion last summer, which underperformed commercially. A subsequent plan to relaunch the franchise as "Destiny Infinity" was also abandoned earlier this year due to high costs and risks, particularly in light of the commitment to Marathon.
Destiny 2 originally launched on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in September 2017, with a PC version released shortly after. Bungie self-published the game after its split from Activision in January 2019, but faced ongoing financial difficulties and declining player numbers as expansions failed to meet expectations. Analysts suggest that Marathon has also failed to meet its sales targets.
