Marathon is set to receive a significant overhaul with a roadmap of new game modes and updates designed to address its difficult launch period and attract new players. Bungie revealed its plans via a Twitter post, outlining a strategy to introduce more accessible gameplay experiences alongside its core extraction mechanics.
The upcoming changes will introduce a team deathmatch mode and new PvE (player versus environment) content, drawing inspiration from Bungie's work on Destiny. The game's tutorial area, Perimeter, will also be expanded to match the scope of other zones, providing a more robust introduction for newcomers.
Bungie's stated goal is to reduce the friction new players experience by offering more familiar gameplay types, which should theoretically ease them into Marathon's divisive extraction mode. The 'experimental' Vault Breaker co-op mode, released previously, serves as an early example of this approach.
The update schedule begins in October with a refresh of the Nightfall mode. This will be followed in December by the Symbiosis update, which will introduce Marathon's first permanent PvE mode and the new Team Deathmatch option. Details on the specifics of the PvE mode are expected closer to its release.
Looking ahead to March, the game's one-year anniversary, Bungie plans a larger update intended to unify these various gameplay modes. This update will also feature a revamped onboarding experience, hinted at in a recently released behind-the-scenes documentary, and will include a notable new enemy: a giant Tick Queen.
Beyond Marathon, Bungie is also returning its focus to Destiny, beginning with the reintroduction of vaulted content to Destiny 2. The studio has affirmed a long-term commitment to the Destiny franchise, with developers emphasizing its foundational role in Bungie's history and future.
