Bungie has announced a significant shift in its development strategy, committing to the continued support of Destiny 2 and the restoration of previously vaulted content. This decision comes after a period of significant studio changes, including layoffs, and follows a frank acknowledgment from the company's new leadership regarding past missteps.
In a joint blog post, studio head Poria Torkan and Marathon general manager Josh Deane stated, "We aren’t just listening to feedback, we understand your disappointment." They admitted that over the last few years, the company lost sight of its community and that this had led to "real consequences," including the loss of "incredible colleagues." The leadership expressed a commitment to rebuilding trust by focusing on player satisfaction and delivering on promises.
"Destiny is foundational to Bungie’s future," Torkan and Deane wrote, indicating that the company has "more stories to tell, new worlds to build." To facilitate this, Bungie plans to reintroduce a number of Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids that were removed to make way for newer content. The developers acknowledged that this is a substantial undertaking but emphasized their dedication to the game's universe. This move is seen as a response to player feedback and likely a compromise following recent workforce reductions.
Marathon's Evolution
Regarding their upcoming title, Marathon, the leadership stated that the game "did not reach as many players as [Bungie] had hoped" and "needs to evolve." Consequently, Bungie will be adjusting the game's development approach, moving away from strict seasonal updates. The aim is to reignite interest with a significant PvE update planned for December.
Torkan and Deane concluded by stating that this is a crucial time for Bungie, and their future depends on making clear choices, delivering on commitments, and being honest about their performance. They highlighted internal changes such as simplifying priorities, reducing competing initiatives, decentralizing decision-making, and recalibrating success metrics to prioritize player satisfaction. While the immediate future does not signal a Destiny 3, the focus remains on revitalizing Destiny 2 and ensuring the studio's long-term stability and ambition are aligned with player expectations.
