Bungie has confirmed plans to sublease 210,984 square feet of its expansive headquarters in Bellevue, Washington. This decision comes after significant layoffs and aligns with the studio's continued adoption of a remote work strategy and a "digital-first" operational model.
The commercial leasing brochure obtained by The Game Post indicates that the available space will be subleased through September 30, 2035. Bungie stated that this move reflects evolving workplace needs and the effectiveness of remote collaboration, assuring that the company will maintain a physical office presence in Bellevue.
The news has prompted mixed reactions from the community. Some observers view the sublease as a logical step given the recent reduction in workforce, suggesting it is more practical than leaving the space vacant. Others have expressed concern regarding the implications for Bungie's future projects and overall stability.
This announcement follows a period of substantial workforce reductions at Bungie. In June, the studio laid off 292 employees at its Bellevue office, marking its third round of layoffs in three years. Prior to this, the company had reportedly employed around 1,000 staff members at the location in 2023. Between October 2023 and July 2024, Bungie is reported to have let go of approximately 320 employees.
Bungie's recent actions and strategic shifts have coincided with fan discussions, particularly concerning the future of the Destiny franchise. During a PlayStation State of Play event, many viewers expressed a desire for "Destiny 3," following the developer's decision to conclude support for the current title in favor of focusing on the new Marathon game. Reports had previously suggested that plans for a "Destiny Infinity" relaunch and a direct sequel were considered but ultimately not pursued.
