Bungie Vows to Restore Vaulted Destiny 2 Content, Rework Marathon

Bungie has announced plans to restore content previously removed from Destiny 2, including vaulted campaigns, destinations, and raids. This move comes as the studio aims to regain player trust after ceasing active development on the nine-year-old game, a decision that led to significant player backlash. Bungie studio heads Poria Torkan and Josh Deane acknowledged this resentment in a developer video and blog post, stating that the new leadership team must own past decisions.

"We aren’t just listening to feedback, we understand your disappointment," the studio stated in its blog post. "We are not asking you to trust what we say today. We know that trust must be earned through the quality of our games, the decisions we make, and how consistently we show up for our players."

The restoration of vaulted content will require significant work. Bungie noted that years of updates have fundamentally changed Destiny 2, necessitating revisions to lighting, combat encounters, and other elements to ensure compatibility with the current game version. The studio has committed to providing ongoing updates on its progress in the coming months. Bungie also suggested that this unvaulting effort is the "first step to lay the foundation for how we reforge into new stories and games that you all deserve."

In addition to the Destiny 2 content revival, Bungie is addressing its extraction shooter, Marathon. The studio admitted that the game "did not reach as many players as we had hoped" and requires evolution. Bungie plans to expand Marathon into a "deeper survival experience," with ongoing efforts to strengthen its combat, world, and competitive elements. The goal is to offer meaningful experiences for players who prefer cooperative PvE, competitive PvP, or the hybrid PvPvE gameplay.

Bungie intends to collaborate with the community on Marathon's development and has additional updates planned for the October Nightfall Refresh and December Symbiosis. Further details about Marathon will be shared later this week.

2026 has presented significant challenges for Bungie. Marathon launched in March to a generally positive critical reception, but has struggled to maintain player numbers. This has been exacerbated by the end of Destiny 2's active development, with some players attributing Marathon's perceived underperformance to the studio's pivot away from its long-running shooter. The situation was further complicated by layoffs affecting much of the Destiny 2 development team following the end of its lifecycle. Bungie's current efforts to address these issues and rebuild its relationship with its player base will be critical in determining the future engagement with both Marathon and any subsequent projects.
