The Call of Duty franchise has now surpassed $40 billion in lifetime revenue, a significant milestone announced by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma following the launch of its latest entry, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
Sharma shared the news on her X account, accompanied by a graphic highlighting positive review scores for Modern Warfare 4. She remarked, "One of the most celebrated Call of Duty games in its 24-year history, and now $40B in lifetime franchise revenue. An incredible milestone. Congrats to the Activision team. And to the players, thank you for being with us."
The franchise has maintained remarkable staying power over its history, with critical and player reception varying across its yearly releases. The new Modern Warfare 4 appears to be well-received, with IGN's reviewer Simon Cardy noting that its campaign "made me feel something for the series again" and praising an "expansive behind-enemy-lines mission that borrows most of its ideas from the DMZ mode" as a particular highlight.
For context, Grand Theft Auto 5 has generated over $10 billion in revenue over 13 years, and Grand Theft Auto 6 is projected to earn up to $5.2 billion within its first week of release.
Call of Duty is also set to expand beyond video games with a feature film directed by Peter Berg, scheduled for theatrical release on June 30, 2028. The movie is expected to explore "the cost of war" for its characters.
