Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) Port May Be Coming, Australian Rating Suggests

The original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, released in 2009, may be headed to modern platforms. The Australian Classification Board (ACB) has issued a new R 18+ rating for the title, which was updated on October 1, 2026. This fresh classification, specifically noting "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)," suggests that a port of Infinity Ward's acclaimed shooter could be announced soon.

This potential re-release follows a similar strategy employed by Activision earlier this year with the Black Ops series. Ports for Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 were initially leaked, then officially announced, and subsequently launched within a short period. Black Ops 2, in particular, reportedly became one of the best-selling games of the year following its re-release.

However, these recent Call of Duty ports were not without criticism. Many players and critics labeled them as "low effort," citing a lack of significant upgrades compared to the original releases. Issues also arose with multiplayer lobbies being populated by exploiters rather than players engaging with the game as intended, prompting Activision to investigate.

Further complicating the Black Ops re-releases were their price points. Both games launched at $40 each on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, with additional season passes costing $29.99. While PlayStation Plus discounts offered some relief, these factors may lead players to scrutinize pricing and content for any future Call of Duty ports.

Activision and Microsoft initially released the Black Ops 1 and 2 ports exclusively on PlayStation consoles. The platforms for a potential Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) port remain unconfirmed, as does the possibility of other older Call of Duty titles receiving similar treatment. Further details are expected to be revealed by Activision.

Upon its original release, IGN awarded Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 a score of 9.5 out of 10. The game's campaign and multiplayer modes were highly praised, with IGN noting its "intense action" and "innovative multiplayer features."
