Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's recent beta test has provided players with an early look at a variety of upcoming features, including dynamic cosmetic options for certain operators. This new system, dubbed 'Operator Variant', enables players to alter their character's appearance mid-game.
For example, the popular operator Ghost can now have his mask removed, revealing another cloth mask underneath, and then put back on. Similarly, Valeria can equip a hockey mask. Captain Price has also been given a new dynamic cosmetic feature: he can smoke a cigar, which remains visible in first-person view until removed or until the player respawns.
These cosmetic additions are expected to be particularly prominent in premium skins. While specific details on future skins remain scarce, Infinity Ward has indicated a commitment to a more grounded aesthetic following fan feedback on previous installments. The studio has stated that the game will not feature crossovers with characters like Lady Gaga, Omni-Man, Teletubbies, or SpongeBob.
The beta period has also seen mixed reactions from the player base. Some concerns have been raised regarding the game's pacing, particularly on its relatively small maps, and the rapid time-to-kill (TTK). Infinity Ward has been actively addressing this feedback, releasing patches to adjust TTK and spawn mechanics, and is also working on improvements to the gunsmith system prior to the game's full launch. Multiplayer design lead Jackie Reynolds emphasized the beta's importance in shaping the final product, stating that the playtest serves as a crucial starting point for dialogue with the public. The development team aims to continue learning and iterating based on player input to enhance the game.
