Activision has begun marketing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 as the "epic conclusion" to the Modern Warfare saga, a designation that has left fans speculating about the future of the popular franchise. The phrasing in promotional materials for the game's latest trailer suggests that this may mark the end of the current Modern Warfare universe, which began with the series reboot in 2019.
This branding coincides with comments from Treyarch design director Kevin Drew, who recently stated the studio was ready to "make something new and something that nobody's ever experienced before." These remarks, made as the studio concluded support for two consecutive Black Ops titles, have fueled speculation that the Black Ops series might be taking a hiatus to allow Treyarch to develop an entirely new subfranchise, its first in nearly two decades.
The potential winding down of both the Modern Warfare and Black Ops series would represent a significant shift for Call of Duty. It would be the first time since the introduction of Black Ops in 2010 that the franchise has not had at least one established sub-series in active development. While Sledgehammer Games' next project is unconfirmed, it is also anticipated to be a new subfranchise, following the less-than-stellar reception of its previous titles like Advanced Warfare and its subsequent World War II entries.
The original Modern Warfare trilogy concluded after three installments in 2011. While ideas for a fourth game were explored at the time, the studio ultimately pivoted to develop Call of Duty: Ghosts. After both Ghosts and Infinity Ward's subsequent title, Infinite Warfare, failed to resonate with players, the studio returned to the Modern Warfare reboot. The 2019 reboot is widely credited with revitalizing Call of Duty during a period of declining fan confidence and also introduced the highly successful Warzone battle royale mode.
During the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast, Activision confirmed that Mads Mikkelsen, star of Death Stranding, will portray a major antagonist in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The game is scheduled for release on PC and consoles on October 23, but will not be available on Xbox Game Pass.
