Infinity Ward has detailed a new competitive multiplayer mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, titled Kill Block. This mode is described as an "adaptive multiplayer battleground" where players engage on modular maps that constantly change. The facility itself, codenamed Kill Block, is presented as an off-the-books West Bridge Advanced Military Training site.
The core of Kill Block lies in its reconfigurable nature. The maps are composed of three "Slabs": two outer sections known as End Slabs and a central combat area called the Central Slab. These Slabs can be rearranged into hundreds of unique combinations, fundamentally altering routes, sightlines, and engagement spaces on the fly. Each match utilizes a combination of three connected Slabs, forming a "Combo," which Infinity Ward states will offer a playable area similar in size to the Shoot House map from 2019's Modern Warfare.
These Slabs are modular environments, drawing inspiration from both classic Modern Warfare locations and entirely new designs. Their arrangement shifts not only between matches but also between Gunfight rounds, ensuring that cover placement and visibility are always dynamic. The studio also notes that Kill Block will feature simulated weather effects, such as mist or snow flurries, which can further impact visibility during gameplay.
Infinity Ward has provided examples of potential Slabs, including:
- Ambush (Central Slab): A training facsimile of a classic Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare map, featuring a main road with destroyed buildings and elevated sniper positions.
- Blacksite (End Slab): Three prefabricated structures with open access, offering tactical cover from rusted vans, cargo containers, and concrete barriers.
- Killhouse (End Slab): A recreation of a section from the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare map, with gabions, prefab walls, and a central kill box.
- ME-Town (Central Slab): A dirt courtyard surrounded by four prefabricated structures, providing interior and rooftop spaces for long-range engagements.
- Snow Block (End Slab): A configuration of stacked gabion walls, cargo containers, and concrete blocks designed to offer elevated vantage points at the cost of cover.
- Trench (Central Slab): A no-man's land with sunken mud walls, pill boxes, sandbags, and a burned tank, creating a hazardous open area with limited protection.
Kill Block will also support new Gunfight variants, including 3v3 and a new 10v10 mode. In Kill Block Gunfight matches, teams swap sides after the first round. At the start of the second round, the Slabs reconfigure into a new map layout, and players receive a fresh random loadout. This cycle of shifting maps and loadouts continues every two rounds until one team achieves victory in a maximum of six rounds.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to launch on October 23 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC.
