Call of Duty: Warzone to Limit Customization for Legacy Weapons in Modern Warfare 4 Integration

Call of Duty is set to introduce significant changes to how content carries forward into Warzone with the integration of Modern Warfare 4. While players will continue to have access to weapons from previous titles, there will be limitations on their customization.

Operator skins and weapons from Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops 6, and Black Ops 7 will remain accessible in Warzone for Season 1. This includes any blueprints and camos that players have acquired. However, a notable shift will occur in how these older firearms can be utilized within the battle royale.

Weapons from the last three Call of Duty titles will be classified as "legacy" weapons in Warzone. Currently, these guns can be fully customized in the Gunsmith, similar to current-generation weapons. This functionality will change following Modern Warfare 4's integration. Activision has confirmed that the option to customize legacy weapons will be removed.

"While these weapons remain available to use, Gunsmith functionality and prior custom loadouts will not be supported for legacy weapons or legacy blueprints," the publisher stated. Despite this restriction, legacy base weapons will still be available with a five-attachment version, and any owned blueprints will retain their existing attachment configurations. Activision aims to ensure the weapon meta for this chapter of Call of Duty: Warzone feels distinctly rooted in Modern Warfare 4, while still allowing players to use nostalgic choices.

This decision may face player criticism, as many invest considerable time into unlocking attachments. Pre-built weapon sets might not suit all playstyles, potentially diminishing the appeal of using classic guns. Some players also favor specific favorite weapons regardless of the current meta, and these restrictions could limit their options.

Regarding operator skins, all legacy skins from previous titles will be preserved. Players will have a toggle feature to control which skins they see, allowing them to maintain immersion within Modern Warfare 4's aesthetic or continue to display the variety of skins from recent years.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for release on October 23 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The title will feature a full campaign, multiplayer, and a DMZ extraction mode. An early access period for the Modern Warfare 4 campaign begins on October 16.
