Leaked footage has surfaced that appears to show "Assassin's Creed Destiny," a previously unannounced mainline entry in Ubisoft's historical stealth-action series that was reportedly set in ancient China.
According to a report, the game was envisioned as a large-scale, open-world Assassin's Creed title, distinct from the mobile-focused "Assassin's Creed Jade" which explores a similar historical setting. "Destiny" was reportedly in development with a partnership between Ubisoft and Tencent, the Chinese technology and gaming conglomerate. The game's prototype footage suggests a focus on modern console and PC platforms.
The setting for "Destiny" was reportedly the year 206 BCE, during the transition from the Qin dynasty to the Han dynasty following a civil war, with a potential narrative focus on Liu Bang's rise to power. The leaked footage shows a hooded assassin engaged in combat during a siege, as well as greybox environments demonstrating combat abilities. One notable element shown was a spinning umbrella weapon.
Further details from the footage suggest players might have had a choice between a male or female protagonist, or possibly dual protagonists similar to "Assassin's Creed Shadows." The game's user interface elements, such as yin-yang symbols and ink brush motifs, were apparently designed to thematically align with the historical Chinese setting.
While "Assassin's Creed Destiny" was seemingly canceled, "Assassin's Creed Jade" remains in development, though reports indicate it has been delayed to 2025. The broader Assassin's Creed franchise has seen recent leadership changes, with Jean Guesdon appointed as Head of Content, following the departures of "Assassin's Creed Hexe" director Benoit Richer and creative director Clint Hocking.
