Borderlands Online, a free-to-play MMO spin-off originally planned for release exclusively in China, is now playable thanks to the efforts of passionate modders. A build of the game, discovered a year ago, has been revived, allowing players to experience the cancelled title.
The process of getting Borderlands Online functional presented significant challenges. Modder EpicNNG described the undertaking as vastly exceeding the scope of their previous work, with initial hurdles including bypassing the login screen. A substantial effort was also dedicated to translating the game into English, which necessitated UI and HUD modifications to accommodate differing text formats.
EpicNNG highlighted that the team deliberately avoided using generative AI in their revival project, citing concerns about the technology's rapid advancement. This decision aligns with other unofficial projects that have chosen to forgo AI tools. The modders intended to release the revived game at the end of the year, but the increasing power of AI prompted them to expedite the process to prevent their work from becoming obsolete.
While Take-Two, the publisher, is reportedly aware of the project through various tip-offs, no official communication has been received by the modding team. The project is not generating any revenue and is unlikely to be officially revived due to its age. The team acknowledges that the game will likely be taken down at some point, emphasizing that now is the opportune time for interested individuals to engage with the revived Borderlands Online.
