Capcom Clarifies AI Use in Game Development

Capcom has detailed its approach to artificial intelligence within its game development pipeline, aiming to clarify fan concerns following discussions about its RE Engine. The company confirmed that while AI will play a role in streamlining development processes, it will not be used for generating game assets.

During a recent recruitment conference, programmer Satoshi Ishida discussed the company's plans to evolve the RE Engine through a program dubbed REX (RE Next Engine). This initiative involves incrementally improving the existing engine rather than building a new one from scratch. AI is being considered as a tool to help address the increasing scale and complexity of modern game development, which demands significant time and resources.

A Capcom spokesperson explained that AI could assist developers by improving tools, testing code, and analyzing large datasets, thereby increasing efficiency. The vision for REX is to integrate these AI-driven efficiencies into future iterations of the RE Engine, enabling faster game creation with enhanced development tools.

Capcom reiterated its stance that generative AI, which creates content based on prompts, will not be employed for creating game assets. This policy aligns with statements made during a shareholders' meeting in March, where the company emphasized its commitment to not implementing AI-generated assets into its games. Instead, the focus is on harnessing AI technology to boost productivity and efficiency in areas such as graphics, sound, and programming.
