Capcom Hints at Resident Evil "Crossover" as Remakes Approach Original Timeline

Capcom is strategically planning for a future where its ongoing series of Resident Evil remakes eventually catches up to the timeline of the original numbered titles. This has led to the conception of a mysterious "crossover" event designed to reconcile these two narrative paths.

Executive producer Jun Takeuchi revealed in an interview that preparations for this convergence have been underway since the development of Resident Evil Village. Elements such as the reintroduction of characters like Umbrella and Spencer, and the return of Raccoon City in Resident Evil Requiem, are all part of this larger plan.

Initially, these additions were intended as fan service. However, their reception indicated a significant player interest that exceeded Capcom's expectations. This positive response encouraged the development team to further integrate these elements into Village and Requiem, setting the stage for a more substantial narrative intersection.

Capcom has extensively remade titles like Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4, enhancing them with updated visuals and gameplay while also introducing new narrative variations. The company has also slated remakes for Resident Evil: Code Veronica in 2027 and Resident Evil 0 reportedly in 2028. This strategy raises the question of how Capcom will proceed once all the original games have been remade, especially considering that only Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 remain before reaching the era of Resident Evil 7, which introduced the RE Engine used in the remakes. The planned crossover suggests Capcom intends to move beyond simply remaking existing games, aiming instead for a unique narrative continuation that ties together the franchise's past and present.
