Capcom is looking to capitalize on the successful return of its dormant franchises, citing the strong performance of the recently released Onimusha: Way of the Sword as a blueprint for future projects. The new Onimusha title achieved one million sales on its launch day, bringing the franchise's lifetime sales to ten million. This resurgence is significant for a series that has been inactive for approximately two decades.

In a statement, Capcom expressed its ambition to replicate Onimusha's success with other long-dormant game series. "In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on reactivating IPs that haven't had a new title launch recently," the company announced. "The company is working to further maximize corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, including this title." Capcom also attributed the recent Onimusha's sales to "several marketing initiatives," including playable demos and hands-on exhibition events, which helped raise awareness for the game.

The success of Onimusha: Way of the Sword also points to the game's inherent quality, featuring impressive visuals and engaging combat. The positive reception could encourage Capcom to revisit other beloved but inactive franchises. Potential candidates for revival include Devil May Cry, whose last entry, Devil May Cry 5, was released in 2019. Other franchises that have not seen new releases in many years include Lost Planet, Viewtiful Joe, and Dino Crisis.

Capcom's efforts to revive older IPs follow a strong year for the company in 2026. The year began with the release of Resident Evil Requiem in February, followed by Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection in March and the unexpected success of Pragmata in April. Furthermore, established titles such as Street Fighter 6 continue to receive post-launch support. The company also has significant future releases planned, including Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen in October, a major expansion for Monster Hunter Wilds, and Resident Evil Veronica. Capcom's reactivation strategy is set to continue next year with the launch of Mega Man: Dual Override.
