Capcom's acclaimed sci-fi shooter, Pragmata, initially encountered substantial internal criticism, with early builds being described as disappointing by the publisher. Developers revealed that test stages for the game were repeatedly rejected, with internal feedback citing incompetence in level design and an inability to create compelling puzzles or action.
Development on Pragmata began in 2019 when Capcom Development Division 1 lead Jun Takeuchi tasked younger team members with creating a moon-set game, which would eventually become Pragmata. The title was first revealed to the public in 2020 with a planned 2022 release. However, the project immediately faced development hurdles, leading to its first delay in 2021.
Following this initial period of negative internal reviews, the Pragmata team focused on developing unique systems to enhance the gameplay experience. This led to the implementation of the game's signature hacking mechanic, a minigame designed to disable enemy shields before engaging with traditional weaponry. Despite this system now being a praised element that revitalizes the third-person shooter genre, one internal reviewer at the time stated, "This has fundamentally worsened the game. I am deeply disappointed." Other early critiques labeled the mechanic as "so boring," with one reviewer questioning the entertainment value of the proposed feature.
After two major rounds of negative internal assessments, the development team presented a revised build to Capcom's upper management. This presentation was pivotal for the project's future. While the presentation was successful and allowed development to continue, Pragmata faced an indefinite delay in 2023. Between this delay and its 2025 reveal that established a 2026 release date, the team worked intensely to refine the game.
Pragmata ultimately achieved critical acclaim and commercial success, with Capcom announcing sales of over two million copies worldwide shortly after its release. The game is available on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
