Capcom's Pragmata Team Formed "Diana Police" to Perfect Child Android's Portrayal

Capcom's long-awaited space title, Pragmata, has seen considerable success since its April release, with particular acclaim directed at the evolving relationship between astronaut Hugh and his android companion, Diana. To ensure Diana's portrayal struck the right chord, the development team enlisted a special group nicknamed the "Diana Police."

Producer Naoto Oyama explained during a recent Father's Day livestream that this group, comprised of female staff members, was instrumental in refining Diana's character. They provided crucial feedback and direction to motion capture artists and voice actors, aiming for a naturalistic representation of childhood innocence rather than an exaggerated or artificial one. For instance, Nao Toyama, the Japanese voice actress for Diana, was instructed to speak as a child would naturally, avoiding an overly cute delivery.

Director Cho Yonghee suggested that women possess a keener ability to discern the subtle nuances of "cunning" cuteness in female characters, a detail he humorously contrasted with men's potential difficulty in recognizing such distinctions. This approach proved vital in crafting a believable and endearing companion.

In addition to character development, Capcom also announced that Hugh's "Scribble Suit" demonstration will be integrated into the main game as a free update, available from the date of the announcement. The game has already achieved significant commercial success, selling one million copies within its first two days and reaching two million by May. Director's interest in a sequel has been noted, especially following comments from Capcom USA's chief operating officer, Rob Dyer, that hinted at Pragmata's potential to become a franchise.
