Capcom Teases AI Integration in Future RE Engine Development

Capcom programmer Satoshi Ishida has indicated the company's intention to integrate artificial intelligence into the development of its RE Engine, the proprietary technology behind titles like Resident Evil Requiem and Onimusha. Speaking at the Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026, Ishida outlined a vision for the next iteration of the RE Engine, referred to as the REX Project, which aims to "create games together with AI."

While many planned improvements for the RE Engine focus on technical aspects such as data formatting and memory management, Ishida emphasized that "successfully integrating AI technology into development workflows has become an essential condition for streamlining future development." This statement suggests AI will play a role in optimizing the game creation process.

However, Capcom has clarified that its current AI initiatives do not involve generative AI for creating in-game content. In March 2026, the company informed investors that it had no plans to use generative AI for asset production. This distinction is significant for players concerned about the increasing prevalence of AI-generated content in the gaming industry. The RE Engine's evolution, therefore, appears to be focused on AI assisting developers rather than replacing creative roles.

Despite this reassurance, the prospect of AI integration has raised concerns among some players who value the handcrafted quality of Capcom's games. The developer's commitment to a future where games are made "together with AI" signals a significant shift in its development philosophy, even if the immediate impact will be on workflows rather than final assets.
