Capcom has announced intentions to evolve its proprietary RE Engine into an "AI-generation game engine." This initiative, detailed during the "Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026," aims to integrate artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to enhance game development workflows.
Programmer Satoshi Ishida presented the project, codenamed "REX," which comprises six distinct programs designed to imbue the RE Engine with AI capabilities. These tools focus on augmenting development processes rather than directly generating game assets. For instance, Re:Dox is a data management program that translates various data types into a unified format for faster processing. RE:UI, on the other hand, is designed to offer AI-assisted optimization for the engine's development tools, akin to adding DLSS-like support for creative software.
Streamlining Development with AI
Furthering the goal of efficiency, the RE Engine will see the introduction of RE: Runtime, a program that enables the animation of large groups of objects and characters simultaneously, reducing the need for individual real-time animations. Another notable tool is RE: Flows, which aims to simplify the implementation of game mechanic concepts by converting them into a standardized programming language. While the exact functionality of RE: Flows remains to be seen, it suggests an approach to rapid prototyping and development.
Capcom cites several reasons for this strategic shift. The increasing scale and technical complexity of modern games present significant data management challenges, making iterative changes time-consuming. Additionally, with over 2,000 global users of the RE Engine, creating a universally understandable system is a priority. The rapid advancement of AI technology is also recognized as essential for streamlining development.
This move aligns with Capcom's stated policy on AI, which has previously emphasized that the company "will not implement assets generated by AI into our game content" but will leverage AI to "enhance efficiency and boost productivity" within its development pipeline. The tools presented do not appear to be focused on generating art or character models, though their operation might necessitate AI-assisted code.
Capcom's development strategy has proven highly effective in recent years, establishing the company as a reliable creator of critically and commercially successful titles. While the pursuit of faster and more efficient development is understandable, the publisher's current approach has yielded significant success, leading to a situation where major changes might not be strictly necessary.
