Former BioWare general manager and Mass Effect director Casey Hudson has shared his thoughts on the recent announcement of BioWare's closure. He stated that he will "forever be grateful" for his tenure at the studio and expressed his belief that its legacy will continue through the work of its former employees.
"This is sad news on multiple fronts—for those of us who worked there, for our friends and colleagues at BioWare who are impacted, and for fans who were looking forward to the next Mass Effect adventure," Hudson wrote on X. "I started my career at BioWare and will forever be grateful to the founders, Greg and Ray, for inviting me to join in BioWare's legendary journey. Its legacy will live on through those who were part of it and continue to create games through a passion for unforgettable stories, worlds, and characters."
Hudson played a significant role in some of BioWare's most acclaimed titles, serving as project director for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy. He departed the studio in 2014, returned in 2017 as general manager, and left again in 2020.
Since his final departure from BioWare, Hudson has been involved in new game development ventures. His most recent studio, Arcanaut Studios, which is staffed by several former BioWare developers, is currently working on Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. Hudson has described this upcoming narrative-driven action RPG as a spiritual successor to Knights of the Old Republic.
The closure of BioWare, known for its contributions to franchises such as Baldur's Gate, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age, has prompted widespread reactions from the gaming community and industry figures. Other developers, including CD Projekt joint CEO Michał Nowakowski and Larian CEO Swen Vincke, have also acknowledged BioWare's significant impact on the RPG genre. Legendary developer Warren Spector was more direct, calling the studio's closure "utter bullshit."
