Caves of Qud Expansion 'Diaspora' Lets Players Become Plants and Animals

The expansive roguelike Caves of Qud is set to receive its first major expansion, titled Diaspora, arriving in early access on December 9th. Developed by Freehold Games, this expansion introduces a significant new feature: the ability for players to embody a variety of plant and animal species.

This approach to releasing complex additions in early access mirrors the base game's development. Freehold Games stated in a blog post that "Caves of Qud is an extremely complicated game with many interlocking systems & features and lots of unpredictable, emergent gameplay." The studio aims to leverage community testing to refine the expansion, adding that "Diaspora will add a whole new layer to that."

The playable flora and fauna will include creatures such as cats, dogs, frogs, and chameleons, alongside vines and trees. These new forms will come with unique mutations and unlock new gameplay possibilities. The expansion also introduces new creatures and "artifacts of disparate cultures."

Diaspora will feature improvements to world generation, with more sophisticated algorithms for road and river networks designed to lead players to interesting locations. The expansion is planned to receive further additions throughout 2027, including a new questline focused on migrants entering Qud and a unique dromedary named Je'ome the Bounty. Additionally, players can anticipate two new humanoid factions, the foxen and snailfolk, alongside more creatures, items, biomes, ingredients, and diseases. The update also plans to introduce roaming mega-caravans, underground villages, multi-zone dungeons, and new music.

An update to the base Caves of Qud game is also planned, likely to coincide with Diaspora's early access launch or its full release. Some of the free content from the expansion will be integrated into the base game updates, as these will drive much of Diaspora's content. Freehold Games intends to provide regular updates, either weekly or monthly depending on development activity, with a detailed roadmap to be released at launch.
