CD Projekt Red has opted against including crossover content within its own games, such as The Witcher or Cyberpunk, to ensure players receive a consistent experience regardless of where they purchase the title. This approach means that while a Geralt-inspired skin is coming to Diablo 4, players will not find Diablo-themed outfits for Geralt in The Witcher 3 Remastered.
Level design lead Miles Tost elaborated on this strategy in a recent interview, stating that the studio values content parity across all platforms. Historically, CD Projekt Red has preferred to offer exclusive physical bonuses for pre-orders or specific retailers, like a set of cards for Xbox pre-orders of The Witcher 3, rather than locking in-game content behind platform or storefront exclusivity.
"One thing we really value is to not have content that is purely exclusive depending on where you buy," Tost explained. "Usually, when we need to do something exclusive for [partners], what we've done in the past are things like an exclusive physical hoodie. For us, it's really important to preserve that, if you buy the game and play it, you always get the full version of it."
While CD Projekt Red is amenable to its franchises appearing in other games with platform-exclusive elements, like the Geralt skin in Diablo 4, it is hesitant to implement such exclusivity for its own titles. Tost indicated that the studio remains open-minded about future collaborations and is willing to adapt its approach based on player feedback and the reception of current cross-game initiatives.
"It's not that we are of a mindset where we'll do one thing and then never do another," Tost concluded. "Honestly, we'll listen to what feedback we'll get from these [BlizzCon announcements], how the responses are, and then we'll see about this with an open mind."
This stance means that for now, crossovers will likely continue to feature CD Projekt Red's characters in other games, rather than the other way around, with The Witcher and Cyberpunk franchises being the primary hosts for such integrations in titles like Diablo 4, Fortnite, and Overwatch.
