Project Sirius, an unannounced game in CD Projekt Red's The Witcher universe, is reportedly undergoing another significant shift in its development. According to a report by Kotaku, nine individuals were laid off from The Molasses Flood, the studio responsible for Project Sirius and a subsidiary of CD Projekt Red. An additional nine employees have been reassigned to other projects within the company.
These changes are described as part of a "broader shift in development strategy." This is not the first time Project Sirius has faced significant staff reductions; in 2023, CD Projekt Red confirmed that over 25 layoffs occurred as the developers implemented a "new framework" for the game. At the time, the company stated, "We are excited with the updated direction, but we are not ready to talk about details just yet."
CD Projekt Red initially announced Project Sirius in October 2022. The company described the project as an "innovative take on The Witcher series," intended to appeal to both long-time fans and new players. While details remain scarce, the project has been widely rumored to be a multiplayer-focused title.
The Molasses Flood, based in Boston, previously developed the survival game The Flame in the Flood, which featured original music by Chuck Ragan. Project Sirius is one of several games currently in development at CD Projekt Red, alongside sequels and new installments in its established franchises, including Cyberpunk 2, The Witcher 4, 5, and 6, and a title in partnership with Scopely.
