CD Projekt, the parent company of The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red, has adopted a new name: CD Projekt Red. This rebranding, intended to unify its various business units, has paradoxically introduced significant confusion by adopting the same name as its well-known game development studio.
The company's new official name is CD Projekt Red Spółka Akcyjna, with the latter part being a Polish term for a joint-stock company. The decision to rename was made during a company vote aimed at consolidating the operations of its broader business entities, including the original CD Projekt Red studio and its subsidiaries. According to a statement from the company, the intention was to establish a single primary entity that encompasses all of CD Projekt's existing activities.
CD Projekt Red stated that the studio's current operations align with the Company's core business, which involves video game production and publishing, as well as brand management, including the creation and licensing of related products. The company believes the new name will foster consistency in how the CD Projekt Red brand is communicated globally, potentially aiding in market identification and recruitment.
However, this renaming may complicate distinguishing between announcements from CD Projekt as the publisher and CD Projekt Red as the developer. This could make it challenging for players to ascertain the source and implications of news related to franchises such as Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher.
Development continues on a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, although details remain scarce. The studio has acknowledged that its reputation has not fully recovered since the game's initial launch. Separately, the anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is slated for release this fall, with a new trailer now available.
Regarding The Witcher franchise, there has been no substantial news about The Witcher 4. To bridge the gap until the next main installment and a new intellectual property, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will receive an expansion titled "Songs of the Past." Further information on this downloadable content is expected to be revealed at Gamescom, scheduled to take place in Cologne, Germany, from August 26 to August 30.
