CD Projekt Spent Two Years Iterating on Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty's Chimera Tank Boss Fight

The development of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty's Chimera Tank boss fight, a pivotal early-game encounter, involved a two-year iteration process, CD Projekt revealed. The Polish developer discussed the complex creation of the sequence on the official AnsweRED podcast, highlighting how the fight served as a nexus point for various development disciplines.

Game director Gabe Amatangelo explained that the team aimed to make the Chimera Tank "terrify" players with its weaponry, a goal that required balancing numerous moving parts across gameplay, narrative, art, and worldbuilding. "Sometimes it was too gameplay [focussed], sometimes it was too narrative, sometimes too art direction," Amatangelo stated, describing the iterative process of refining the sequence.

Art director Paweł Mielniczuk noted that the fight's development spanned two years. During this period, the tank underwent "four" distinct iterations, involving changes to its equipment and weapons. Creative director Igor Sarzyński further emphasized the asset's significance, calling the Chimera Tank "one of the most expensive art assets I think ever."

Mielniczuk's comments underscore the extensive effort invested in crafting this particular encounter. While the fight proved memorable for many players, the author of the source article found it to be one of the more challenging segments of Phantom Liberty, drawing comparisons to difficult boss battles in The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone.
