Celeste and TowerFall Delisted from Xbox Digital Storefronts in Support of BDS Boycott

Critically acclaimed titles Celeste and TowerFall have been removed from Xbox's digital storefronts, a move confirmed by Maddy Thorson of Maddy Makes Games, the developer behind both games. The decision was made to support the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, according to a statement from Thorson on BlueSky. Microsoft's gaming division is identified as a target by the Palestinian-led BDS movement, which also lists major tech companies like Google and Amazon.

House House, the developer of the co-op puzzle adventure Big Walk, previously explained that their game would not be available on Xbox for similar reasons. The BDS movement specifically targets Microsoft and Xbox as part of its broader campaign against perceived Israeli occupation and human rights violations.

By delisting Celeste and TowerFall, the developers are preventing Microsoft from profiting from sales made through its digital storefront. Microsoft, like other console manufacturers, often subsidizes hardware costs and recoups expenses through game sales. Removing games from sale directly impacts this revenue stream. For Xbox owners wishing to adhere to the boycott, purchasing used physical copies or opting for alternative platforms are presented as options.

Both Celeste and TowerFall remain available on other platforms, including Steam. TowerFall can be found on the platform, and Celeste is also available for purchase there. The delisting signifies a developer's stance on political issues impacting the broader tech industry, extending into the gaming space.
