Christopher Barrett, the former director of Marathon, has reached a settlement with Sony and Bungie in the lawsuit he filed after his departure from the studio. Barrett's exit from Bungie was confirmed in March 2024.

Reports from August 2024 indicated that Barrett was terminated after multiple female staff members at Bungie accused him of inappropriate behavior. Following his dismissal, Barrett initiated legal proceedings against Sony and Bungie, alleging breach of contract and defamation. His suit claimed the firing was orchestrated to prevent him from receiving a bonus exceeding $45 million. The legal documents from this case included details of alleged inappropriate text messages sent by Barrett to staff members.

In recent posts on X and LinkedIn, Barrett announced the resolution of the legal dispute. "I am pleased to share that Sony, Bungie, and I have reached an agreement to resolve the lawsuit," Barrett stated. "The outcome is one I am very satisfied with, and I am grateful to everyone who stood by me. Closing this chapter allows me to focus my attention on what’s next in my gaming journey, and I look forward to what lies ahead."

A joint statement released as part of the settlement confirmed the agreement. "The litigation between Sony Interactive Entertainment, Bungie, and Christopher Barrett has been settled," the statement read. "For 25 years, Mr. Barrett contributed to some of Bungie’s most successful games. Mr. Barrett was the original game director for Marathon, and his name has been added to the game’s credits to reflect that."

Details regarding any financial compensation within the settlement were not disclosed by either party. This resolution comes shortly after Bungie's decision to lay off at least 292 employees and halt further development of new content for Destiny 2.
