Christopher Nolan's latest film, an adaptation of Homer's "The Odyssey," is generating significant buzz with sold-out IMAX screenings. Fans eager to experience the epic at home will likely face a considerable wait, with digital and physical releases potentially not arriving until late 2026 or early 2027.

Universal Pictures typically adheres to a staggered release schedule for its theatrical productions. Digital purchase or rental usually becomes available five to six weeks after a film's cinema debut. For instance, "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" launched digitally about six weeks after its theatrical premiere. However, Nolan is known for advocating extended theatrical runs for his films. His previous work, "Oppenheimer," premiered in July 2023 but did not become available digitally until November of that year, indicating a four-month gap. Given "The Odyssey" premiered on July 17, a similar four-month delay could push its digital release into November 2026.

Physical media releases on Blu-ray and DVD traditionally follow the digital launch by another three to four weeks. "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" received its physical release approximately six weeks after its digital debut. "Oppenheimer," however, saw its digital and physical releases coincide, a move potentially influenced by the director's support for physical media. Given the strong demand for "Oppenheimer" on Blu-ray, early preorders for "The Odyssey" may be advisable for those wishing to own a copy.

Streaming availability on Peacock is also subject to Universal's distribution strategy. "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" is slated to stream on Peacock roughly four months after its theatrical debut, while "Wicked: For Good" arrived on the platform four months post-theatrical release. "Oppenheimer" took nearly six months to reach Peacock. Extrapolating from these examples, "The Odyssey" could potentially stream on Peacock in early 2027.

Furthermore, Universal has a distribution agreement with Netflix, granting the streaming giant a 10-month window after the film's exclusive period on Peacock. This arrangement suggests "The Odyssey" could arrive on Netflix in the summer of 2027, following its initial run on Peacock.
