Cities: Skylines Announced for Switch 2, Sequel Console Ports Remain Elusive

Paradox Interactive has announced Cities: Skylines - Expanded Edition for the Nintendo Switch 2, a port of the 2015 city-building hit developed by Colossal Order. This announcement arrives as the console versions of the sequel, Cities: Skylines 2, continue to face significant delays.

Developed by Tantalus Media, known for their work on The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword's Switch port, Cities: Skylines - Expanded Edition will feature a wealth of content for $49. It includes 10 expansions, an expanded buildable area of 25 tiles, keyboard and mouse support, and a map editor. Players can also expect enhanced precision placement and environmental controls, with options for a 30fps mode prioritizing visual fidelity or a 60fps performance mode. The game is set to launch on October 28. Owners of the original Switch version will be eligible for a 70% discount. Additionally, the "Holiday Getaways," "Mansions & Manors," and "Blueprint Beasts Radio" content creator packs will be released simultaneously for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One versions of the game.

While the original Cities: Skylines continues to receive updates and new platform releases, Cities: Skylines 2 and its console ports have encountered a more troubled development path. Originally slated for a simultaneous October 2023 release on PC and consoles, the console ports were first postponed to Spring 2024. Following the PC version's launch, which was reportedly plagued by bugs and performance issues that Colossal Order spent months addressing, the console ports were delayed again in Spring 2024 to October 2024. The developers cited that "We have not yet met the stability and performance targets we set for the console release." As of now, over two years after its initial planned release, the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S ports remain unavailable.

In November 2025, Iceflake Studios assumed development of Cities: Skylines 2 from Colossal Order, with a stated commitment to "continuous work on the Editor and console editions." No further information regarding the console ports has been shared since this transition. The development of Cities: Skylines - Expanded Edition for Switch 2 by Tantalus Media appears to be separate from Iceflake Studios' work, suggesting no direct connection between the two releases. Nevertheless, the status of the Cities: Skylines 2 console ports remains uncertain, further compounded by the recent announcement of the Switch 2 port and the reveal of Lego Skylines for PC and console.
