Oni Press is set to launch Citizen: Stardust, a 12-issue maxi-series reimagining the Golden Age superhero Stardust the Super Wizard. The new comic, slated for release in April 2027, is a collaboration between writer Dave Baker and artist Malachi Ward, with colors by Dave Stewart.
The series offers a postmodern update to the character originally created by Fletcher Hanks and first appearing in 1939's Fantastic Comics #1. The story centers on Barclay Flagg, the actor who portrayed the superhero Stardust in films and radio shows. Following a career-ending assassination attempt in 1947, Flagg has lived a life of decline, marked by excess and ego. His fortunes may change with an invitation to The Institute, an experimental arts retreat focused on radical creativity, where he intends to create a definitive Stardust masterpiece.
Citizen: Stardust will explore Flagg's attempt to restore his reputation and rekindle his celebrity at the Institute. However, the official summary suggests that his dreams may be too good to be true, and the hero within him might not be contained. "The probability of Stardust: The Super-Wizard becoming one of the most bizarre and unique comics to be published in 2027 seems extraordinarily high," said Baker in a statement. "Malachi Ward and I are bringing a new perspective to the superhero world informed by psychogeography, cult sacrifices, and technology beyond human comprehension. If that doesn't make you want to read it? Just know that there's a cat of nine tails made of human skulls."
More details about Citizen: Stardust will be revealed by Oni Press at their New York Comic Con panel on Friday, October 9, from 4:30 PM to 5:15 PM ET in North-Room S 406.1.
