Firaxis Games and 2K have announced significant upcoming content for Sid Meier's Civilization 7, including free updates and a major expansion titled Earthrise, slated for release in 2027. The expansion will introduce a strong focus on the space race and civil engineering, alongside mechanics to combat natural disasters.

Before the Earthrise expansion, players can anticipate three major updates. The first, designated update 1.5.0, is scheduled to roll out across all platforms by the end of this month. This update prioritizes quality-of-life improvements, featuring a new Earth map that allows players to begin their civilization at historically accurate starting locations. Enhancements to map generation, the influence system in diplomacy, and the user interface are also included.

The second major update, named Arc of Tomorrow, will arrive in 2027 and significantly alter the game's progression by adding a fourth Age: the Atomic Age. This new era aims to represent the modern period, introducing new urban architecture, distinct tech and civic trees, social policies, and narrative events. Players will gain access to new resources such as enriched uranium and be able to produce great works of film. Notably, the Civilization leader Gandhi will also be introduced in this update. A playtest for Arc of Tomorrow is available for sign-ups later this year.

Culminating the planned content is the paid expansion, Civilization 7: Earthrise, set for release later in 2027. Earthrise promises cosmic additions that will affect every Age of the game. During the Antiquity and Exploration Ages, players can engage in early solar system research and name discovered celestial bodies. The Modern Age will allow for orbital missions around Earth, and within the Atomic Age, players can establish a space agency to explore the solar system and gather resources for use on Earth.

Beyond its spacefaring ambitions, Earthrise will also feature down-to-earth additions, including new unit abilities and technologies that can modify terrain. New civil engineering structures will be introduced to help players manage natural disasters and global warming, drawing comparisons to the themes explored in Civilization: Beyond Earth.

These updates are expected to deploy over the coming year, beginning with update 1.5.0. In related news, Polygon will release a mini-documentary on the Civilization franchise's legacy, featuring an interview with Sid Meier, later this month on its YouTube channel.
