Two years after its initial launch, Firaxis has detailed upcoming content for Civilization 7, including a significant free update and the game's first paid expansion. The 'Arc of Tomorrow' update will introduce an Atomic Age, extending the game's timeline into the near future and adding new gameplay mechanics, units, and visuals.

This free update aims to modernize Civilization 7's endgame. The Atomic Age will feature period-specific gameplay and extend the playable timeline from the 1950s onward. Players will encounter new civilizations and leaders, alongside expanded nuclear gameplay options that include a dynamic system of multilateral agreements. These agreements will allow leaders to collectively respond to global situations, such as nuclear proliferation, with options for disarmament or escalation. New empire management tools will also be introduced, enabling the transformation of Settlements into City-States, which can facilitate proxy warfare for more contained conflicts.

The Atomic Age will also bring new ways to engage with culture and resources. Players will be able to create Great Works of Film, with benefits varying based on the film's quality, requiring Film Crews to find suitable locations. The introduction of Manufactured Goods will allow players to combine specific commodities to create new resources, such as Enriched Uranium. Firaxis is also planning playtesting for the 'Arc of Tomorrow' update later this year.

Following the 'Arc of Tomorrow' update, Civilization 7 will receive its first paid expansion, titled 'Earthrise'. This expansion will focus on space-themed gameplay, weaving a narrative from the Antiquity Age through to the near future. 'Earthrise' is envisioned to include space-based mechanics that offer new bonuses across different Ages. Early Ages might involve charting the night sky and naming celestial bodies, while later Ages could see players establishing space agencies, launching missions to the stars, and exploiting planetary resources.

The expansion will also emphasize environmental adaptability, allowing players to alter terrain and tile bonuses, and gain biome-specific advantages. New civil engineering structures are planned to combat rising global temperatures and natural disasters, with mechanics that could potentially reverse warming effects.

Both the 'Arc of Tomorrow' update and the 'Earthrise' expansion are slated for release in 2027, with the free update arriving first. Prior to these major additions, Civilization 7 will receive a 1.5.0 update later this month, which includes a True Start Location Earth map, new map types like Terra Incognita and Shuffle Voronoi, and improvements to diplomacy, resource generation, and the user interface.
