Sid Meier's Civilization VII is available for free on Steam until September 10, offering a chance for players to experience the latest installment in the long-running strategy franchise. The free-to-play period coincides with the Labor Day weekend in the US and Canada.
Since its launch in early 2025, Civilization VII has undergone significant development. Early reception was mixed, with some major changes to the established formula and an unpopular user interface drawing criticism, alongside performance issues. Firaxis Games has continued to update the title, with a substantial patch released in May reportedly boosting player numbers on Steam. However, player reviews remain divided, with the game holding a "mixed" rating on the platform, and its concurrent player count on Steam is comparable to that of the 16-year-old Civilization V.
For those interested in trying Civilization VII during the free period, the game can be accessed by clicking the "Play Game" button on its Steam store page, following a download. For players who decide to purchase the game after the free trial, both the standard and deluxe editions are available at half price until September 17. The standard edition is priced at $35, with the deluxe edition at $50.
Developers from the Civilization VII team are also scheduled to discuss future plans for the game during a livestream event at PAX on September 5. This presentation will be broadcast on YouTube, Twitch, and Facebook.
