Sandfall Interactive, the studio behind the breakout RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is actively exploring a port for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. However, the development team acknowledges that bringing the visually ambitious title to Nintendo's next-generation hardware presents a considerable technical challenge.
"It's a big technical challenge because we tried to do something beautiful with the game, but of course, the Switch 2 is not as powerful as the PlayStation or the Xbox Series X," stated Tom Guillermin, chief technical officer and lead programmer at Sandfall Interactive, in a recent interview. He further elaborated that many features built on Unreal Engine 5, the game's development engine, are not compatible with the Switch 2. The studio is monitoring updates from Epic Games, such as the recently introduced Lumen Lite, which offers a more performant rendering solution, to assess their viability for the platform.
Lead character artist Alan Reynaud noted that these engine updates require time to implement. While Sandfall Interactive is keen on pursuing a Switch 2 version due to apparent fan demand, there is no concrete release window or announcement at this time. Guillaume Broche, CEO and creative director, emphasized that it is too early to share specifics. The studio, which consists of around 30 people with outsourced assistance, previously announced that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sold one million copies within its first three days of release. The team is reportedly prioritizing their creative vision for future projects, with Broche expressing a desire to make games that resonate with players regardless of prevailing industry trends.
