Clash Royale: The Grand Arena, a board game adaptation of Supercell's popular mobile title, has officially launched on Kickstarter and achieved its initial $25,000 funding goal in less than an hour. Pledges for the game begin at $49.
This project follows a previous collaboration between Maestro Media and Supercell, which resulted in Clash of Clans: The Epic Raid, another board game that successfully raised over $500,000 on Kickstarter. Based on the rapid success of The Grand Arena, it is anticipated to achieve similar financial results before its crowdfunding campaign concludes in November.
Lead designer David Gordon explained that the development focused on replicating the core experience of the video game. "We tried mechanisms such as actual real time play against a clock, putting out a bunch of cubes, and simultaneous reveals, as well as various strategies to minimize the admin for players. Ultimately, we found that focusing on elixir spending in a turn-based card play system yielded a fun experience that most resembled that of the video game," Gordon stated.
The game is designed for two to four players, each controlling a force represented by an eight-card deck built around a chosen Champion. Players take turns attempting to destroy their opponent's towers by spending elixir. Accumulating crowns, awarded for each destroyed tower, determines the winner. Gordon emphasized that the game is designed to be accessible to strategy game fans unfamiliar with the video game, ensuring a fun experience without requiring prior knowledge of the franchise's lore.
