Hellraiser creator Clive Barker harbored concerns that the franchise's new video game adaptation would be "overly censored," but ultimately expressed profound pride in the final product and the extent to which developers were able to "push it."
In a recent interview with Dread Central, Barker shared his thoughts on Saber Interactive's Hellraiser: Revival. He noted that while he anticipated potential censorship, he was "genuinely astonished by how far they’ve been able to push it," concluding that he is "proud as f**k at the end result."
The game, which eschews the multiplayer focus of previous adaptations for a single-player survival experience, has earned a strict "M for Mature" rating from the ESRB. This rating indicates content such as blood and gore, intense violence, nudity, and strong sexual content.
Hellraiser: Revival's intensity has reportedly led to extreme reactions; one French YouTuber allegedly faced a permanent channel ban after uploading gameplay footage, even after attempting to censor explicit moments. This incident highlights the game's boundary-pushing nature within the franchise.
Barker, who has been involved with the Hellraiser universe since its inception in the '80s, indicated a desire to explore further within the franchise, whether through future games or other media. He sees the success of Revival as a potential catalyst for re-envisioning existing IPs in new ways.
"I think what was achieved in the game is a wake-up call to anyone who’s been involved in the making of a franchise like Hellraiser," Barker stated. "It says to get your ideas warmed over so you can go back into existing worlds in a brand new way. I have many ideas that I’d like to see realized in the Hellraiser universe, and I’m planning to keep my fingers in that pie."
IGN awarded Hellraiser: Revival a 6/10, with the review noting that while the depiction of Pinhead was commendable, other aspects of the game did not meet the same standard.
